Founded in 1960 by the Shawnee Mission Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), the Johnson County Christmas Bureau began as an "Adopt a Family" program. Growth in the number of clients and a desire to treat all families equitably resulted in the transition to the Holiday Shop concept in 1977. Our basic principles include a centralized location, selection of goods that meet individual family needs, making sure children's needs are met, pre-qualification of clients, scheduled appointments to shop, and giving clients the opportunity to select their own merchandise. JCCB remains the only countywide agency that provides holiday assistance from newborn to nursing home across multiple product lines.
We run a 9-10 day Holiday Shop during the month of December. At the Holiday Shop pre-qualified clients shop by appointment. All clients are below 150% of the poverty level and reside in Johnson County, Kansas. The Holiday Shop is similar to a department store. Our Holiday Shop is the original pop-up. Each client is assisted by a volunteer.
EACH CLIENT VISITING THE HOLIDAY SHOP HAS THE DIGNITY OF SELECTING THEIR OWN MERCHANDISE, IS PERSONALLY ESCORTED THROUGH THE SHOP BY A VOLUNTEER AND RECEIVES ALL OF THE FOLLOWING:
This year's Holiday Shop will open December 3, 2021.
Location: Former Toys R Us, 11620 West 95th St, Overland Park, KS
Client applications will be available after October 1, 2021.
Volunteer sign-ups will also begin in October.
Please watch for updates as 2021 Holiday Shop plans progress.
Nursing homes can pick up packages at the beginning of the Holiday Shop to distribute to their residents on Medicaid. Packages can include various different items such as pajamas, slipper socks, twin bedding, lap quilts, tool belts and walker bags. The nursing homes then distribute the packages to their residents. If you are a Johnson County nursing home serving residents on Medicaid, please contact us for more information.
